Social Media Ban for Kids in the UK: Which Platforms Are Targeted?.
UK Set to Block Certain Online Platforms for Minors
According to Espreso.tv: Starting next spring, the United Kingdom will implement a ban on specific online platforms to better protect children. Inspired by a model similar to Australia’s, this policy targets major services like YouTube, Facebook, and X. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Signal, however, will not be affected.
The restrictions focus on harmful features, including:
- live streaming;
- communication between children under 16 and unknown adults.
Regulations governing these changes are expected to be finalized by the end of this year. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer weighed in on the initiative, stating:
'To me, it’s clear that a full ban is the right choice.' Keir Starmer
He added that the move would have a profound impact, saying it will 'keep our children safe, make them happier, give them more time, more security, more freedom to grow up, and more opportunities.'
Starmer also stressed the importance of safeguarding kids in the digital world, asking: 'Is there any situation in the offline world where you would simply let your child talk to a stranger, an adult you know nothing about?' No, so we are taking action on this.'
Global Push for Child Online Safety
The ban is designed to enhance children’s safety when using online services. This UK initiative is part of a broader global effort to protect minors in digital spaces, where risks often go unnoticed. Similar measures have already been adopted in other countries, reflecting growing concern over the impact of online content on young people. If successfully implemented, this prohibition could mark a significant step toward creating a safer internet for children.
