Over 100 Labour MPs Demand Starmer’s Resignation as Pressure Mounts on UK Prime Minister.
Growing Calls for Leadership Change
According to Espreso.tv: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing mounting pressure after Labour MP Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, won a parliamentary by-election. More than 100 Labour MPs have publicly called for Starmer to step down or set a timeline for his departure. His position as party leader is now seen as increasingly unstable, especially after Labour suffered one of its worst local election defeats in May.
Government Turmoil and Resignations
Internal government tensions became apparent on June 11 when Defence Secretary John Healey resigned over disagreements with Starmer on defense spending. Healey had proposed increasing defense expenditure to 2.68% of GDP by 2030, but his initiatives failed to gain Starmer’s support. In response, the Prime Minister appointed Dan Jarvis as the new Defence Secretary and Angela Eagle as the new Security Minister.
Burnham’s victory in the Makerfield by-election has further strengthened his standing within the party. As he stated, this represents
“a new path for the country”. His success may act as a catalyst for a leadership change within the Labour Party, where potential successors—including Burnham and Wes Streeting—are already being discussed.
The current situation within both the party and the government highlights growing divisions and dissatisfaction among MPs, which could lead to major shifts in the UK’s political landscape.
These developments underscore the rising tension within the Labour Party, where internal conflicts may trigger significant leadership changes. Burnham’s by-election win could signal the emergence of new political directions that may reshape the government’s future and Labour’s electoral prospects. The situation continues to evolve, and Starmer’s next moves—or those of his potential challengers—will have a profound impact on the country’s political map.
