Former Laura Muir coach banned: reasons and decisions.

According to The Sun: Former coach of Laura Muir received a three-year ban due to serious violations.

Andy Young was found guilty on nine out of 39 charges brought against him.

A four-day hearing in September 2024 concluded with a ruling confirmed by the disciplinary commission of UK Athletics.

Serious accusations

Young coached Muir, who won medals at the Olympics and World Championships, but received a five-year ban, which was later reduced to three years.

Among the accusations were forcing athletes to compete against medical advice and pressure that led to manipulation and bullying.

In one case, he left an athlete on the side of the road after a quarrel, forcing the athlete to exit the vehicle.

“Mr. Young made a comment regarding an athlete's weight, which upset athlete G.”

“Mr. Young began driving very fast, so athlete G asked him to stop.”

“Mr. Young stopped and allowed athlete G to exit. After that, he drove off. Athlete G was forced to run to the beginning of the training route before finishing the training.”

Young also pressured athletes to participate in competitions against physiotherapists' advice and provided non-specialized nutrition guidance.

Commission's ruling and Muir's comment

Young's ban was deferred from April 2023, and he must undergo training on athlete welfare, medical cooperation, injury management, and anti-bullying.

Statement from UKA: “Both committees confirmed the facts of serious violations and stated that his behavior significantly exceeds the standard required of a licensed coach.”

“The commission concluded that Mr. Young repeatedly prioritized performance over athlete welfare, ignoring medical advice and resorting to manipulation and coercive pressure.”

Muir, who won silver in the 1500 meters in Tokyo, also issued a statement:

“I decided to come forward and confirm my involvement in this case. I fully support the decisions made by both independent committees and am grateful that the process was conducted so thoroughly.”

“Athletics has always been my passion, and I am glad to have rediscovered my love for the sport and enjoyment of training in a supportive environment.”

“I am now focused on the future, looking forward to the next few years of my career and wanting to leave this difficult chapter behind.”
