The legendary department store Rackhams returns to Britain after 25 years.
According to The Sun: The British chain of department stores returns to the UK after 25 years of absence.
This establishment first opened its doors in Birmingham in 1881 and became part of the Harrods group in 1955.
In 2000, the Rackhams store was closed and replaced by House of Fraser after its acquisition by the company in 1959.
Now the luxury department store is returning to the UK, but in an exclusively online shopping format.
The new retailer promises that customers will find a wide selection of designer brands, boutique labels, and everyday products in the categories of fashion, beauty, home, and garden.
The company also offers free shipping on every online order.
Rackhams CEO Mark Jordan said: “At Rackhams, our marketplace-first approach is not a side project — it is the business.”
He added: “Therefore, we give equal weight to the experience for our customers and partners. Unlike expansive marketplaces that rarely provide the necessary support before and after the sale, we are prepared to make that support our primary goal.”
“Having previously built an online retail business to more than £100 million in annual turnover, I wanted to take those lessons in scaling and apply them to a new kind of department store.”
Rackhams Sales Director Will Spencer noted that since the soft launch, they are pleased with the company’s successes: “We have already welcomed over 600 partners and dispatched tens of thousands of orders in less than a year, and we expect this growth to continue.”
Store closures in October
City streets will suffer new losses as eight more stores will close in October.
The retail sector has been struggling in recent years due to rising costs, decreasing footfall, and shrinking consumer spending.
Among the stores closing is the Discount Poundland chain, which plans to close its locations in Liscard, Tenby, Livingston, and Lowestoft.
Another well-known store, The Original Factory Shop, is closing its store in Inverness.
Additionally, major sports retailer Sports Direct will close one of its stores next month.
The Trespass store will close its location in Watford on October 31.
“The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025.”
It is estimated that up to 202,000 jobs in retail may be lost in 2025.
It is worth noting that the return of Rackhams to the market is an attempt to take the classic department store format into a new era, as online shopping becomes increasingly popular. However, alongside this, the retail sector faces serious challenges, such as store closures and job cuts that may impact the economy as a whole.
