The European Union extended sanctions against Russia for another 6 months

The European Union has decided to extend the sanctions regime against Russia for an additional six months. The new strategy was adopted at the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting on January 27, 2025. This information was disclosed by the EU's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, on the social network X.

Getting consensus was preceded by complex diplomatic negotiations, as Hungary opposed extending sanctions. However, Budapest changed its position after receiving guarantees from the EU regarding the protection of its interests in energy security.

It is also known that the EU may suspend sanctions against Syria.
