IWF has suspended nine Russian weightlifters from the World Championship: reasons for the decision.
According to inkorr.com: Of the 16 Russian athletes who planned to participate in the World Weightlifting Championship, only seven received permits from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). This was reported by
Mainichi.
Refusal to participate and violation of the law
IWF did not allow nine weightlifters from Russia, who were included in the main application, as well as four reserve athletes, to compete. Zulflat Garayev, Gevorg Serobyan, Sergey Petrov, Artem Okulov, Georgy Koptsov, Khas-Magomed Balaev, Danilo Vagaitsev, as well as reserve athletes Ramazan Dzhanhotov, Mikhail Podkoritov, Yevgenia Guseva, and Dana Tebloyeva will miss the World Championship.
In addition, the bronze medalist of the 2024 Olympics, Belarusian Yevgeny Tikhontsev, will also not be able to participate in these competitions.
It should be noted that
Mainichihad contacted IWF with information about Russian weightlifters who illegally visited the annexed Crimea and are members of the CSKA military club.
Russian weightlifters entered the territory of occupied Crimea without passing customs and border control, which is a violation of Ukrainian legislation.
Thus, the participation of seven Russian weightlifters in the World Championship was banned due to their illegal activities and visits to the annexed territory. Nine weightlifters from Russia, among whom were heavyweight athletes of world level and bronze medalists of world championships and the Olympics, were not given the opportunity to compete in the competitions. This decision caused considerable surprise in the sports community and underscores the tension in the world of sports.
This situation proves that the sports arena remains an important field for political and ethical debates. The ban on the participation of Russian athletes reflects the ongoing consequences of geopolitical conflicts and the principles upheld by international sports organizations. It is now essential that competitions remain a space for honor and fair play, free from external influences.
