New doping testing system at the 2025 World Championship: what will change for athletes.
New doping testing at the World Championship 2025
According to inkorr.com: The International Testing Agency (ITA) will use a new method of sample collection - dried blood spots (DBS) at the World Weightlifting Championship, which will take place from October 2 to 11 in Ferdis, Norway.
“During the championship, ITA will collect about 300 urine and blood samples. For the first time, ITA will also introduce DBS testing, which will be one of the largest implementations of this innovative method at a single ITA-monitored event.”
The new method involves taking blood from a finger or forearm, applying it to a special card that absorbs it, and allowing it to dry. This avoids the traditional venous blood draw.
ITA also reported that most championship participants have successfully undergone out-of-competition testing in the last six months. However, the International Weightlifting Federation excluded nine Russian athletes from the team, as well as four reserves, among whom were successful participants of previous competitions.
The implementation of the new testing method at the World Weightlifting Championship will significantly enhance doping control at this important event, requiring athletes to adhere to the highest standards of integrity and purity in sports.
This shift towards innovative testing methods reflects the increasing seriousness of the international sports community in the fight against doping use. The new technology may represent a significant step forward in ensuring fairness and transparency in competitions, as well as enhancing trust in weightlifting as a whole.
