Breaking news about Gianfranco Zola
According to The Sun: Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has retired from football and ventured into the world of golf. This time he has received a sensational appointment as part of the European team for the Ryder Cup.
The 59-year-old Zola has already visited the Bethpage Black course to join the Europeans in their quest to retain the trophy, even though he has never played golf before.
Zola also featured in the official team photo for Europe. The Italian, who ended his playing career in 2005, has a new role — that of a golf buggy driver for European vice-captain Francesco Molinari.
Molinari trusts Zola to accompany him during the European team's performances.
Molinari, a West Ham fan, has long been friends with Zola, and they have already played a few rounds together.
Zola is no stranger to golf — he has a decent handicap and has participated in many prestigious pro-am tournaments.
However, his experience playing under pressure at the highest level may prove extremely beneficial this week for the European team.
Zola has already provided some useful advice on how to handle the hostile atmosphere of American fans, which is an important aspect that footballers face much more often than golfers.
“First of all, you need to be able to enter a kind of protective bubble. It’s one of the first things you need to learn if you play football, as sometimes the atmosphere can be like that.”
Zola is confident that his experience will help the team, despite the significant pressure.
During his football career, Zola played 750 matches, received 35 caps for the Italian national team, and won the Serie A title, two FA Cups, one League Cup, and the UEFA Cup.
Now he hopes to help the European team win their 16th Ryder Cup and the first on foreign soil since 2012.
