The Crisis of the West: Why Trump is Only a Symptom of Internal Problems

According to ТСН: Journalist and analyst Marc Felix Serrao believes that the current crisis of the transatlantic alliance has arisen due to internal problems of the West and not because of the policies of US President Donald Trump.

In his column, Serrao notes that it is wrong to blame Trump for the 'destruction of the West.' He is convinced that Europe has created a model of dependency on the USA over a long period, where the role of a military protégé is associated with moral superiority.

“For the protégé, Trump is a threat. For the moralist, he is a gift,”

— says Serrao, commenting on thoughts about the so-called 'strategic autonomy' of the EU.

“Europe without the USA” – an illusion

In Serrao's opinion, the idea of independent defense of Europe without the USA is unrealistic. Although the continent has economic strength, it lacks military power, political cohesion, and strategic will.

He believes that without American protection, EU countries would take different paths, ranging from neutrality to attempts to negotiate with Russia.

“Europe would not become an independent actor – it would again turn into a divided continent,”

— states Serrao.

Greenland and Trump

Regarding the emotional reactions to Trump's statements about Greenland, Serrao considers the European response exaggerated. In his opinion, this is not the 'end of the West,' but classic great power politics and the USA's efforts to achieve dominance in their region.

Trump acts pragmatically, and as the analyst believes, he actually hopes for a deal, while the panic in Europe only strengthens his positions.

The Threats to the West are Not Only External

Serrao also points to internal problems in Western societies, criticizing the restriction of freedom of speech in the EU, chaotic migration policies, and demographic decline.

Moreover, he believes that part of the cultural conflicts in Europe has American origins - from 'Cancel Culture' to the radical reassessment of traditional values.

“The West is undermined not only by Russia and China but also by processes within the societies themselves,”

— emphasizes Serrao.

Trump – a Symptom, Not the Cause

The analyst believes that Trump is not the cause of the crisis of the West, but rather a sharp reaction to it. The main divide is not between Europe and the USA, but within Western societies on both sides of the Atlantic.

“The West faces a choice: either it dissolves into a society of coercion or it returns to freedom, responsibility, and the values that made it strong,”

— summarizes Serrao.

Trump openly states, that he intends to take over Greenland, while European analysts warn that his strategy resembles Putin's scenario of aggressively annexing territories.

It has also been reported that the vice-chair of the French Parliament, Clémence Gallet, plans to vote on a resolution to withdraw from NATO, justifying this with the foreign policy of the Trump administration.

In the current context, discussions about the crisis in the transatlantic alliance emphasize not only the tensions due to external threats but also the significance of internal challenges facing the countries. According to experts, the key to strengthening the alliance will be the ability of European countries to solve their internal problems while maintaining strategic unity and interaction with the USA.
