Car Prices in Ukraine Surge: SUVs and Electric Vehicles See 35% Jump.
Sharp Rise in New Car Prices Across Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: In April 2023, Ukraine experienced a significant increase in the cost of new vehicles, with prices climbing between 5% and 20%. The steepest hikes hit crossover SUVs and electric cars, which became 30% to 35% more expensive. This surge in vehicle costs coincides with a dramatic rise in fuel prices, placing additional strain on consumers. The average price of A-95 gasoline has reached 75.96 UAH per liter, marking a 39% increase, while diesel fuel now averages 85.44 UAH per liter—a 63% jump compared to earlier periods.
Used Car Market Takes a Different Turn
In contrast to the new car segment, the used car market is seeing prices drop. This unusual trend is partly driven by an oversupply of electric vehicles. Last year, Ukraine’s car fleet expanded by 110,000 electric cars, which experts say has influenced the pricing dynamics for pre-owned vehicles. At the same time, electric cars have depreciated by an average of 9%, potentially reflecting shifting consumer preferences and market adjustments.
Additionally, Ukraine has officially reinstated a 20% VAT on imported electric vehicles, a move that could stimulate demand for these models. However, despite these positive steps, the overall auto market remains challenging due to high fuel costs, which continue to burden buyers financially.
Given these factors, Ukraine’s automotive market continues to show instability: new cars are becoming more expensive, while used cars—particularly electric ones—are losing value.
The situation in Ukraine's car market reflects the tough economic conditions that consumers are currently navigating.
Automotive Market Expert
The combination of rising new car prices and soaring fuel costs is eroding household purchasing power. At the same time, falling used car prices may signal the market's adaptation to new realities, especially the growing interest in electric vehicles. This could point to a future shift in Ukraine’s transportation infrastructure, but it also highlights the need to factor economic pressures into automotive policy decisions.
