Winter Fruit Prices Surge in Odesa
According to Novyny.live: At the Cheremushky market in Odesa, fruit prices have climbed this winter, driven by import costs and logistical challenges. Demand remains strong for fruits with a long shelf life. The primary suppliers for these imported goods are countries including Spain, Turkey, Israel, and Syria.
Current Market Prices
The price list at the market is as follows:
- Spanish oranges — 180 UAH per kilogram
- Bananas — 120 UAH per kilogram
- Israeli mandarins — 250 UAH per kilogram
- Spanish mandarins — 200 UAH per kilogram
- Turkish mandarins — 120 UAH per kilogram
- Spanish lemons — 160 UAH per kilogram
- Kiwis — 180 UAH per kilogram
- Syrian pomegranates — 200 UAH per kilogram
- Pears — 130 UAH per kilogram
- Apples — 50–70 UAH per kilogram
Rising costs are attributed to logistical hurdles, delivery expenses, fuel, and labor. As vendor Larisa explained,
“You understand, if they have problems—if they, like us, are working on generators—fuel is expensive, vehicles cost money, and people need to be paid.”These factors significantly impact the final price of fruit, a cost ultimately borne by consumers. This price surge highlights how global and regional economic pressures affect local markets, especially during challenging winter months when supply chains are strained. Consumers seeking longer-lasting produce for their pantries further contribute to the upward price pressure, influencing household food budgets amid broader inflationary trends.
