Why Ukraine is Abandoning Diesel Cars with Mileage.
In the last three years, significant changes have occurred in the choice of cars among Ukrainian car owners. While diesel engines used to be popular, electric vehicles and gasoline models are now in favor.
Gasoline Cars
Gasoline models hold the market leadership, covering 46.1%. This is a slight decrease compared to last year, indicating stable demand. The main reasons for this popularity are the wide range of European models, substantial imports from the USA, easy maintenance, and the possibility of converting to gas.
Diesel Cars
Diesels are experiencing a rapid decline in popularity: in 2022, they accounted for 56.9% of the market, while in the first half of 2025 - only 23.2%. Reasons for this include tightening environmental restrictions in Europe, lack of demand for old diesel models in the EU, and recycling programs, as well as the absence of diesel options in the USA.
Growth in Popularity of Electric Vehicles
The most noticeable trend is the increase in market share of electric vehicles from 1.2% in 2022 to 22.1% in the first half of 2025. Improvements in charging infrastructure, availability of cars from China, the USA, and Korea, as well as savings on fuel, are stimulating demand for these vehicles. The upcoming exemption of electric vehicles from VAT in 2026 is also activating buyers this year.
Hybrid Models
The popularity of hybrids has currently increased fourfold - to 4.8%. Reasons for this include an increase in the number of available models from well-known manufacturers and the ability to save fuel without altering the car's design.
With changes in motor preferences among Ukrainian car owners, we can expect the proliferation of electric vehicles, whose popularity is rapidly growing due to infrastructure development and economic advantages. Gasoline cars are maintaining their positions, while diesel models are losing popularity due to environmental restrictions and lack of demand in western markets.
