Despite being found guilty of rape, McGregor emphasized that this does not mean the end of his political career.

In a post on X, he stated:

“My first attempt in politics, and although I have decided to withdraw my candidacy this time, significant progress has been made.”

“I want to assure the people of Ireland that these will not be my last elections. You will see me again campaigning, fighting for your rights and representing the best interests of our nation.”

“This is not the end, but the beginning of my political journey.”

To participate in the elections, a candidate must be supported by either twenty members of the Oireachtas or four local authorities, and must be an Irish citizen aged at least 35 years.

Today, eleven councils will hold special meetings to consider candidate nominations.

McGregor was trying to gain support from local authorities to get onto the ballot and planned to address the councils.

However, this morning he noted that his campaign

“provoked an important discussion.”

He said:

“This campaign has sparked an important conversation about democracy in Ireland, about who has the right to run, who can vote, and how we can ensure that the presidency truly belongs to the people.”

“This conversation will not end with my withdrawal. The tide of change has already begun, and it cannot be reversed.”

Three Candidates Already Confirmed

Currently, three candidates are registered for the elections.

Former minister Heather Humphreys is running for the Fine Gael party, while former Dublin football team coach Jim Gavin is running for Fianna Fáil.

Galway West Deputy Catherine Connolly has the backing of the Labour Party, Social Democrats, and People Before Profit.

The independent candidate stated she would be ‘happy’ if Sinn Féin supports her campaign when they clarify their position next Saturday.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said her party will announce on September 20 whether they will field their candidate or support Connolly’s campaign.
