Scott & Mears Credit Union Has Stopped Operating: What to Do for Depositors.
According to The Sun: The credit union has gone into administration, leaving all clients without access to their accounts.
Scott & Mears Credit Services Limited (SMCS) ceased trading on September 2 after going into administration.
AlamyScott & Mears Credit Services Limited is under administration.Joint administrators Louise Longley and Julian Pitts from Begbies Traynor have been appointed to oversee the company’s assets and operations.
The administration was caused by a search for professional insolvency advice, after which management acknowledged that the company was no longer solvent.
Administrators recommend that clients cancel any standing orders or other payment agreements with SMCS.
They also urge clients to contact creditors to arrange future payments.
Credit unions provide loans, savings, bank accounts, and other services to their members.
Their goal is to support the community rather than profit, so many accept people who have been turned away by other financial institutions.
However, over the last decade, more than 73 credit unions have closed.
Methe Blend, the CEO of the Association of British Credit Unions, noted:
“Unfortunately, we witness several credit unions closing each year.”
“Typically, those credit unions that close are very small, with a few hundred or possibly a thousand users.”
Can I still access my account?
Usually, in the event of a company's bankruptcy, operations such as payments or withdrawals are suspended or restricted.
It is currently unclear when or under what circumstances you may regain access to your account.
Before attempting to access your account, you should contact the administrator.
Will I get my money back?
In some cases, credit unions under administration are supported by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which means everyone gets their savings back.
The FSCS protects all accounts up to £85,000 per person.
But in this case, FSCS protection is not available, meaning money will not be returned.
What should I do if I have a loan?
If you have made payments on a loan to SMCS, the administration acknowledges that you have met your obligations to the creditor.
However, if you have made only a partial payment, the remaining debt still needs to be settled.
If you have canceled your standing order or other payment agreements with SMCS, contact your creditor for further information.
If you used SMCS for collecting payments, contact the joint administrators by emailing [email protected] or calling 0113 209 1040.
In case of financial difficulties, you can get free and impartial advice from MoneyHelper.
Beware of fraudulent calls allegedly from SMCS or Begbies Traynor.
If you receive one of these calls, hang up and contact the administrators at the given number.
In this situation, many SMCS clients remain uncertain about their financial assets. For the latest information regarding their status, it is important to keep an eye on further updates from the administration and relevant authorities. Clients should be prepared for the fact that the process of regaining access to accounts may take some time.
