Moscow's Stance on Ukraine Joining the EU Is a Diplomatic Trick, Says European Parliament Member.
Russia's Position on Ukraine's EU Membership Under Scrutiny
According to Espreso.tv: European Parliament member Dainius Žalimas has weighed in on Russia's stance regarding Ukraine's potential accession to the European Union, stressing the need to stand by Ukraine during this pivotal moment. According to Žalimas, Moscow is fundamentally opposed to a robust European Union. He argued that despite Russia's claims of not objecting to Ukraine's membership, this is merely a diplomatic maneuver.
Žalimas pointed out that Russia has no interest in seeing the EU grow stronger, particularly in defense matters.
“If you look at other statements from Russia, they are against the European Union becoming more powerful in defense,” the lawmaker noted. He further emphasized that Russia's true goal is to weaken the EU and that it consistently acts against the bloc's interests.
“In reality, Russia is interested in weakening the European Union and operates against the European Union,” he explained.
Ukraine's Military Strength and Global Backing
Dainius Žalimas also highlighted that Ukraine currently boasts the most powerful army in Europe. This growing military capability, he said, only reinforces the critical need for continued international support for Ukraine. As Russia loses ground and faces the repercussions of global pressure, backing Ukraine has become even more urgent.
“That is why Russia is truly against Ukraine joining a strong European Union,” he concluded.
Žalimas's remarks underscore the vital role of international support for Ukraine as it pursues EU membership, while also revealing the deepening friction between Russia and the European Union. Ukraine's situation—especially its military prowess—adds a new layer to discussions about geopolitical interests in the region. Russia's strategy, aimed at weakening the EU, could have serious implications for Ukraine's future integration into European institutions. It is essential that the EU continues to support Kyiv under these circumstances, as this could significantly affect regional stability.
