MMA Referee After Delayed Stopping of the Fight: Fans Outraged by Dangerous Delay.
According to The Sun: The MMA referee faced criticism from fans for the slow reaction to a knockout that occurred as a result of a head strike.
Brazilian João Oliveira fought Wiliam Prado in the 66 kg weight category at the Shooto Brasil 132 tournament held in Rio de Janeiro.
João Oliveira struck Wiliam Prado in the head Oliveira protested to the referee to stop the fight
But Oliveira was forced to continue delivering strikes
In the third round, Oliveira delivered a powerful head strike, causing Prado to fall to the ground. Prado lay helpless, and Oliveira could not deliver additional strikes as his opponent was effectively knocked out.
However, the referee did not stop the fight, forcing Oliveira to continue delivering several strikes before the official finally intervened. The reaction was too late, which sparked outrage among fans online. One viewer noted:
“I really don’t understand how some referees get this job.”
Another user emphasized:
“Some referees in MMA deserve actual prison sentences.”
A third asked:
“How can he be a referee?”
This regional tournament was streamed on UFC Fight Pass. UFC President Dana White has also been critical of the referees’ performance.
Referee Criticism
In 2023, White expressed his outrage over
“one of the worst” refereeing performances he has ever seen when a helpless athlete was subjected to strikes on the floor.
Jalin Turner knocked out Bobby Green as a result of a combination of strikes that seemingly took the lightweight out of the game. But Green managed to cover up on the floor even as Turner continued to attack.
Referee Kerry Hatley delayed his intervention, causing anger among fans due to the entire delay.
UFC President White also expressed his outrage regarding the refereeing, stating:
“One of the worst I have ever seen.”
This situation highlights serious issues in refereeing during combat sports, particularly in the world of MMA, where decisions can affect athletes' lives. Criticism from fans and experts points to the need for improvements to ensure fighter safety. Discussions about reforms in refereeing are becoming increasingly relevant as viewers demand higher quality officiating. Read also
