How to Stay Healthy: 12 Tips from the Public Health Center

There are things in taking care of one's health that depend only on us.

Public health consultant from the Ministry of Health, nutritionist Oleg Shvets, shared what can be done today to become healthier.

1. Have breakfast every day. Take Time for morning meals because it speeds up metabolism and prevents overeating. Studies show that a healthy breakfast enhances productivity at work and school.

2. Plan your meals. First, it will save you time and money. Second, when you prepare meals yourself, you control your diet.

3. Drink enough water. If you don't like plain drinking water, add some flavor with slices of orange, lemon, lime, berries, or cucumber.

4. Move around. Whenever possible, stand up and walk around. Remember, just 30 minutes of walking five times a week can improve your mood.

5. Take a break from gadgets. Set a time interval to put away your phone and turn off your laptop. Reducing screen time frees it for more important activities - walking, reading, cooking.

6. Learn something new. Acquiring new skills helps keep the brain healthy. You can start learning a foreign language.

7. Quit using tobacco. If you still smoke, stop.

8. Try to improve your sleep. Good night sleep improves mood, memory, and concentration, and also helps in absorbing new information. Aim to sleep seven to nine hours a day. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time every day.

9. Exercise your body. Workouts help strengthen the heart and bones and also help in weight loss.

10. Spend more time outdoors. A few minutes in the sun increase vitamin D levels, which is good for bones, heart, and mood. Also, physical activity in general has a positive effect on your health.

11. Maintain balance. If you are young and active, good balance helps prevent injuries. Anything that makes you move, even walking, helps with this.

12. Be mindful. Studies show that mindfulness reduces stress, eases pain, and improves mood.

The Ministry of Health gave advice to parents on how to help children avoid obesity.

For heart health, it's important to minimize the consumption of salt and sugar.

Sugar-containing drinks can harm your health. So the best drink is plain water.
