Rory McIlroy threw his club after a miss at the Ryder Cup: the golfer's reaction went viral.
According to The Sun: Famous Irish golfer Rory McIlroy expressed his frustration by throwing his club when he failed to make an important putt that could have strengthened Europe's position in the Ryder Cup.
The task was to sink the ball from about 2 meters away, which would have added another point to their solid lead on Friday evening.
ReutersRory McIlroy threw his club in despair after missing the putt.
He was playing alongside Shane Lowry against Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns in the last four matches of the day.
McIlroy managed to hit the ball brilliantly down the 18th fairway before reaching the green with a chance for a birdie.
The second-ranked player in the world prepared for the shot, but the ball shifted slightly left, eliciting cheers from the crowd in the USA and frustration among Europeans.
The 36-year-old golfer looked bewildered and threw his club into the air; it fell with a sound onto the 18th green.
Despite the strong performance of Team Europe, which leads 5.5 to 2.5 going into the second day, McIlroy remained dissatisfied with his performance.
Fans actively discussed his action on social media, expressing both support and criticism.
One commentator wrote on X: “Why did you just throw your club on Friday afternoon?”
Another added: “SUBSTITUTE RORY FOR THROWING THE CLUB.”
A spectator noted: “Rory is so nervous, he has missed two close shots already. It will be a disaster if we lose this match.”
And another said: “Throwing the club and letting it hit the ground on the 18th green is unacceptable.”
And one commentator added: “Ugh, Rory! It’s very unsportsmanlike to throw your club like that! It frustrates and annoys me!”
After an interview during which he was informed about the damage to the 18th green, McIlroy went to fix the mark he left.
Nevertheless, Team Europe had an excellent start, winning 3-1 after the first set, giving a crucial advantage to Captain Luke Donald.
However, American counterpart Keegan Bradley faced a tougher task to mobilize his stars.
World number one Scottie Scheffler lost both matches on Friday, failing to show any standout moments.
Bryson DeChambeau also did not display confident play, while Justin Thomas became a star for the American team.
The left side of the field was occupied by the best player on the course on the first day, Jon Rahm, who delivered two outstanding rounds.
Tommy Fleetwood truly became a hero in this significant moment, winning his match along with Justin Rose.
