Drone Incident in Moldova

According to Espreso.tv: A drone of the 'Geran-2' type entered Moldova’s airspace during Russia’s overnight attacks on the Odesa region, crashing and exploding on the outskirts of a village. Moldova’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has labeled the event a security violation. At 1:03 AM, an emergency call via 112 reported the aircraft near the settlement. The 'Geran-2' drone fell and detonated, sparking a fire. Police and firefighters responded to the scene; no casualties have been reported so far.

Russia’s Night Strikes and Regional Security

On the night of July 13, Russian drones targeted Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, and the Odesa region, leaving several people injured, including a 15-year-old boy. Moldova’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement:

“This incident is yet another unacceptable violation of our country’s airspace.”

It noted that this proves Russia’s war against Ukraine poses a direct threat to the safety of Moldovan citizens.

For context, a similar drone crashed in the Romanian city of Galați on the night of May 29, injuring two people. Romania’s Ministry of Defense commented on the situation:

“We failed to intercept the drone in time.”

Romania’s Foreign Ministry also stated that 'this incident is a serious escalation by Russia.'

These occurrences underscore the growing danger that the war in Ukraine presents to neighboring countries like Moldova and Romania. Drone crashes on their soil raise concerns about civilian safety and could prompt stronger military measures or diplomatic responses. Against the backdrop of ongoing Russian attacks, such events highlight the potential for further escalation of the conflict in the region.
