The 29-year-old Brazilian tops the Forbes ranking: the youngest self-made billionaire in the world.
According to ТСН: The 29-year-old Luana Lopes Lara from Brazil is the youngest billionaire in the world and officially tops the Forbes ranking.
The former ballerina has made an impressive career shift: Today, she is a co-founder and one of the executives of the financial company Kalshi, which is valued at $11 billion.
Previously, Kylie Jenner and Taylor Swift held this title, but Lara is the new most successful entrepreneur who earned her wealth herself.
Foundation of Kalshi
Luana and her close friend Tarek Mansour, also 29, met at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and founded Kalshi in 2018 - a platform for market forecasting. According to Forbes, Lara owns 12% of the company, which is approximately $1.3 billion. Mansour reportedly has the same stake according to media reports.
Kalshi allows users to bet on various events - from sports events and elections to trends in pop culture.
“We have seen that betting arises when people have a vision of the future and look for a way to bring it to the market,” Lara explained.
She also emphasized that she aims to create the largest financial exchange in the world.
Challenges and Successes
After graduating from the institute, the founders risked everything: For two years they had no product, and the company might not have survived if it hadn't received approval from the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). It wasn't until November 2020 that Kalshi officially launched as a designated contract market.
Despite conflicts with U.S. regulators, the platform grew steadily. In June 2024, it was valued at $2 billion, in October at $5 billion, and currently at $11 billion.
Biography and Career
Lara's biography is impressive: Before entering the financial world, she danced ballet for ten years at a prestigious school in Joinville, training ten hours a day. Despite strict discipline, she dreamed of an academic career, which eventually led her to studies and the business world.
After achieving billionaire status, Luana surpassed Lucy Guo, co-founder of Scale AI, who held the title since April. Currently, Guo has about $1.3 billion, but Lara is the youngest holder of this title.
It is noteworthy that DTEK CEO Timchenko was also included in the Forbes ranking of the “TOP-25 best leaders in wartime.”
Luana Lopes Lara demonstrates how dreams and determination can lead to significant business success. Her story inspires young people around the world and shows that one can achieve great heights even under the most challenging circumstances. It is important to follow the next steps of this young entrepreneur as her entrepreneurial journey is just beginning.
