Expert warns: why driving with a low fuel reserve damages your car

According to inkorr.com: American mechanic Scotty Kilmer warned drivers about the dangers of driving on a nearly empty gas tank. He noted that such a mistake can lead to serious damage to the car and significant repair costs. In his YouTube video, the expert explained why this practice is risky for new cars.

In older cars with carburetors, this only led to the engine stalling, but modern vehicles can suffer serious damage due to a lack of fuel in the tank.

Many drivers believe that it is okay to drive until the fuel gauge needle drops to 'E' (empty). But Kilmer stresses that this is a misconception, as there is a significant difference between old and new cars.

Why this is dangerous:

The main problem is that in modern fuel systems, the pumps are located inside the fuel tank, and fuel serves as lubrication for their mechanisms.

Fuel actually lubricates the bearings inside the fuel pump. When there is no fuel left, the pump starts sucking air, which can lead to the bearings breaking down.

To avoid these problems, Kilmer advises drivers to refuel when the tank is a quarter full, to prolong the life of the fuel pump and reduce repair costs.

Helpful tips from the mechanic:

  • Do not use wheels with a larger diameter than recommended by the manufacturer to avoid premature wear of the suspension.
  • Use an express diagnostics method with a spark plug for a quick assessment of your engine's condition.

Kilmer emphasizes that following these tips will help keep the car in good condition for a long time.

It is currently important to remember about prevention when operating vehicles. Refueling on time can not only save money but also prevent serious breakdowns. This is especially relevant for drivers of new models, as their systems require more caution.
