Rugby teams have banned R360 players from representing their country: what is known

According to The Sun: England has joined the world of international rugby by opposing the new, separated R360 league. As a result, a ban has been announced on national team matches for players who choose to join this competition.

In a joint statement released by the Six Nations rugby associations (except for Wales), as well as the unions from South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia, they strongly criticized this initiative, urging potential participants to be very cautious.

The R360 league, led by 2003 World Cup winner Mike Tindall, is criticized for its focus on profit benefiting a 'very small elite', rather than developing rugby for the entire sporting community.

This announcement came just days after the International Rugby Players Association recommended seeking legal advice before signing a contract.

Further consequences for R360

These actions have dealt a serious blow to the league, which planned to start in October next year. If R360 does appear in the sporting arena, it is unlikely to attract the most famous players.

In the statement, it was mentioned:

“As a group of national rugby unions, we urge great caution for players and coaching staff considering joining the proposed R360 competition.”

The Gaelic Rugby Union, which is currently undergoing restructuring, also supported this position and reserves the right not to select players for international matches if they participate in R360.

Plans and details of the new league

The concept of a separated league includes the participation of 12 teams, of which eight are men's and four are women's, in a global tournament to be hosted by cities like London, Miami, Tokyo, and Lisbon.

Approximately 200 players are believed to have signed preliminary contracts worth up to £750,000, however, none of them have announced their participation yet. It is also unclear who will be the investors in the new competition.

Despite the position of international unions, R360 believes in the possibility of launching the league next year and plans to seek sanction from World Rugby in the next summer season.

In their statement, it was noted:

“So many players love what R360 can do for them and the game, and we are looking forward to launching next year.”

The organizers emphasized that they aim to work within the global rugby calendar and will develop biographies for men's and women's teams, also noting the possibility of all players participating in international matches.

The mentioned confrontation could significantly impact the future of rugby as a whole, as the attempt to create a new league amidst global trends and commercial interests raises concerns among traditional rugby unions. The situation is evolving, and it is worth observing how it will affect the further dynamics in the world of rugby.
