Hungary Blocks EU's Latest Russia Sanctions and a €90 Billion Ukraine Loan.
EU Proposes New Sanctions Against Russia
According to UATV: EU High Representative Kaja Kallas has announced a new set of sanctions against Russia, emphasizing the need for sustained pressure to achieve peace. She also revealed that Hungary is blocking a €90 billion loan for Ukraine, a financial aid package that was approved back in December. Hungary's continued obstruction of the EU's 20th sanctions package against Russia is causing significant concern among other European partners.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which began with Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, has now entered its tenth year, with tensions remaining high.
Kaja Kallas: 'Hungary continues to block the EU's 20th sanctions package against Russia.'
Kallas stressed the critical importance of a swift and decisive response to Russian actions, stating: 'If we had immediately provided everything we are providing now, the Russians might have altered their plans.'
Obstacles in Negotiations
Kallas further pointed to problematic demands emerging in negotiation drafts, including one concerning the size of the Ukrainian military:
Kaja Kallas: 'We see in the draft agreement a demand to limit the size of the Ukrainian army.'
She also argued that expecting dialogue is futile if Russia is waiting for the U.S. to fulfill agreements from talks in Alaska: 'If the Russians are waiting for the Americans to implement the agreements from the Alaska negotiations, then why should they talk to us?'
Consequently, the international community, particularly the European Union, continues to explore avenues to pressure Russia into seeking peace. This effort persists despite Hungary's blockage of crucial financial support for Ukraine.
This standoff highlights the complexities of intra-European relations and the significant challenges the EU faces in formulating a unified foreign policy. Hungary's veto on sanctions and aid risks undermining EU solidarity in countering Russian aggression and supporting Ukraine, potentially leading to a further escalation of the conflict.
