New EU Sanctions Package Targets Medinsky and Patriarch Kirill.
Draft Proposals for the 21st EU Sanctions Package
According to Espreso.tv: European Union officials have drawn up a new round of sanctions targeting Russian businessmen and state figures, including Vladimir Medinsky and Patriarch Kirill, according to a leaked document obtained by Radio Svoboda. The draft outlines measures that would expand restrictions on individuals linked to the Kremlin's inner circle.
Vladimir Medinsky, who led Russia's delegation during peace talks with Ukraine in spring 2022, now heads the Russian team for negotiations on ending the war. The document also names Vladimir Gundyayev, known as Patriarch Kirill, who is cited for 'consistently justifying and supporting Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, calling it sacred.' This highlights his prominent role in Russian politics and propaganda.
Sanctions and Their Impact
The document notes that 'the fact that he was invited to this meeting shows his closeness to Putin's inner circle.' Among others facing restrictions is Arkady Dvorkovich, president of the International Chess Federation, who previously held senior positions in the Russian government.
The 21st sanctions package was presented on June 10, when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled new measures aimed at supporting Ukraine and increasing pressure on Russia. This package is part of the EU's ongoing efforts to counter Russian aggression and promote regional stability.
This latest sanctions package underscores the European Union's continued policy of applying pressure on Russia over its aggression against Ukraine. Specifically, the measures target key individuals who support or justify Kremlin actions, potentially impacting their activities and reputations. At the same time, these steps reaffirm EU solidarity with Ukraine and its commitment to backing the country's fight for independence and territorial integrity.
