EU to appoint special envoy for negotiations with Putin: who is in the running

According to ТСН: The European Union plans to actively engage in the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine to avoid the influence of Washington. Among the key candidates for negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin are Alexander Stubb and Mario Draghi.

According to Politico, the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron to restore dialogue with Moscow has received support in Brussels and other important European capitals. The main goal of the EU is to create an autonomous communication channel that will demonstrate to the United States the presence of Europe's own political influence and readiness to participate in continental security issues.

Who could be the 'voice' of Europe

Discussions in the EU corridors are ongoing regarding the candidacy of a special envoy for negotiations, with the main contenders being Mario Draghi and Alexander Stubb.

Former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi is an important ally of Ukraine. His candidacy is supported by Italian senator Giovanni Battista Fazzolari, likely due to his personal connections— the senator's wife is Ukrainian.

Alexander Stubb, the current President of Finland, was one of the first to propose the idea of creating the position of a special envoy and put forward his own candidacy.

EU leadership's position

The introduction of the position of special envoy has received broad support among member state leaders and in the EU Council. However, there is some division within European diplomacy. The main opponent is EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas, who is against direct contacts with Vladimir Putin, considering them premature and dangerous.

The importance of these discussions and initiatives cannot be overstated, as the peace process in Ukraine remains a critical issue for the stability of Europe. Observing the EU's further steps gives hope that the situation may find new solutions that satisfy all parties to the conflict.
