EU Backs Opening of Sixth Cluster for Ukraine’s Accession: Final Decision Set for July 14.
Support for Launching the Sixth Cluster on Foreign Relations
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka announced that the Committee of Permanent Representatives of EU member states (COREPER) has approved the opening of the sixth cluster, titled 'Foreign Relations.' This marks a significant milestone in Ukraine’s European Union accession talks. The formal endorsement is anticipated during the Intergovernmental Conference scheduled for July 14.
On June 15, all EU countries officially agreed to open the first negotiation cluster, 'Fundamentals,' for both Ukraine and Moldova. However, later that month, Hungary blocked progress on the remaining five clusters, creating obstacles in the negotiations. This week, Hungary lifted its veto on the sixth cluster and agreed to send a letter to Ukraine and Moldova, clearing the path forward.
Relevance of Foreign Relations in Today’s Context
Kachka highlighted the significance of the sixth cluster, stating,
“Cluster 6 is particularly imp. in today's global security”— Taras Kachka. This underscores the importance of foreign relations amid modern security challenges. Consequently, opening new clusters is a vital component of Ukraine’s integration into the European community.
The launch of the 'Foreign Relations' cluster represents a crucial step in Ukraine’s European integration journey, signaling progress in negotiations and continued support from EU member states. Successfully completing this phase could strengthen Ukraine’s international standing and foster deeper cooperation with the European Union in the face of contemporary security threats.
