EU Set to Grant UK Access to €60 Billion in Weapons Funding for Ukraine.
EU-UK Government Deal Nears Finalization
According to Espreso.tv: The European Union is close to finalizing an agreement with the British government that would enable UK companies to tap into the defense portion of an EU loan designated for Ukraine covering 2026–2027. The total loan stands at €90 billion, with €60 billion earmarked specifically for arms purchases.
An announcement could come as early as next week during a meeting in Paris, which European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is set to attend. This development is significant because previous efforts to include the UK in the €150 billion EU defense fund known as SAFE had stalled.
Shifting Politics and Ukraine’s Situation
It is worth noting that the NATO summit held in Ankara on July 7–8 had already cleared the way for British access to the Ukraine loan. Meanwhile, against the backdrop of political change in the UK, Keir Starmer announced his resignation as Prime Minister on June 22, with Andy Burnham expected to take over as head of government. Talks over financial support for Ukraine are becoming increasingly urgent as the situation on the ground deteriorates.
Securing this agreement could mark a pivotal step in strengthening Western military aid to Ukraine, especially amid ongoing aggression.
Granting British firms access to the EU loan opens new avenues for supplying weapons and military hardware, which in turn could shift the dynamics of the conflict. The crisis in Ukraine, combined with the political transition in the UK, underscores the critical need for international cooperation to ensure stability and security in the region.
