EU Summit Backs Ukraine with Strong Measures
According to Espreso.tv: During a summit in Brussels, all 27 European Union member states unanimously agreed to extend sanctions against Russia for another twelve months. This decision is part of a broader EU strategy to support Ukraine and bolster the bloc's defense capabilities by 2030. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who addressed the European Council meeting, expressed gratitude to European partners for their continued support and called for accelerated negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership.
Key Summit Priorities
In discussing support for Ukraine, Zelensky emphasized that 'Ukraine not only aspires to European integration but has earned this right through its fight for freedom, independence, and European values.'
Alongside this, the summit addressed strengthening the European Union's defense capabilities, a goal set for completion by 2030. This issue has gained particular urgency amid rising military threats in the region.
The summit also announced the unblocking of 6 billion euros from the European Peace Facility, a crucial funding source for defense initiatives. Additionally, discussions concerning Ukraine included the urgent matter of returning illegally deported Ukrainian children, which requires immediate resolution.
Concluding his address, Zelensky stated that
