EU Sanctions Nine Individuals Over Bucha Massacre, Including General Chaiko.
New EU Sanctions Linked to the Bucha Events
According to UATV: On March 16, 2026, the Council of the European Union imposed new sanctions on nine individuals connected to the atrocities in Bucha during the Russian occupation in February-March 2022, marking the fourth anniversary of the tragedy. These measures form part of a broader campaign to condemn Russia's actions and support Ukraine's fight for sovereignty.
Among those listed is Colonel General Alexander Chaiko, who was the highest-ranking Russian military commander in Ukraine at the time of the invasion. The sanctions now cover 2,600 individuals and entities. In addition to the nine targets, the EU also imposed further restrictions on four people involved in Russia's hybrid activities. The newly sanctioned individuals include:
- Sergey Klyuchenkov
- Ernest Mackevičius
- Graham Phillips
- Adrien Bocquet
All nine individuals face personal restrictions: their assets in EU countries are frozen, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing them with financial resources, according to the Council's press service. These actions aim to punish those responsible for the horrific events in Bucha and underscore the European Union's determination to stand with Ukraine.
The imposition of these new sanctions highlights the European Union's ongoing policy of holding accountable those who committed crimes during the war in Ukraine and condemning them at the international level.
These steps also demonstrate the EU's readiness to continue supporting Ukraine on its path to restoring peace and stability in the region, while reaffirming the importance of remembering the tragedies that occurred during the conflict.
