EU Rolls Out 21st Sanctions Package Against Russia: Key Measures and Targets.
New EU Sanctions Target Russia's Economy and Maritime Sector
According to UATV: The European Union has announced its 21st sanctions package against Russia, expanding restrictions across energy, finance, trade, and—for the first time—the fishing industry. This latest round includes a ban on supplying liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers to Russia, as well as prohibiting transactions with 31 Russian banks. The list of vessels linked to Russia's shadow fleet has grown by 30 ships, bringing the total to 662. These measures aim to further strain Russia's economy, which is already facing inflation near 6% and interest rates at 14.5%.
The package also introduces an import ban on new goods, including auto parts. By tightening the economic noose, the EU continues to pressure Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
EU Approves Major Financial Aid for Ukraine
Separately, the EU has approved a financial assistance package for Ukraine, with the first loan tranche set at €90 billion. Key allocations include:
- €6 billion for drone procurement;
- over €3 billion in macro-financial aid.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated: 'After four years of full-scale invasion, Russia has failed to conquer Ukraine. The cost for Russia grows every day.'
She added: 'For the first time, we propose banning entry to the European Union for anyone who has served in the Russian armed forces since the start of the war.'
This dual approach—tightening sanctions on Russia while bolstering Ukraine—underscores the EU's commitment to countering aggression and supporting Ukraine's fight for sovereignty and territorial integrity. The measures highlight the bloc's resolve to maintain pressure on Moscow as the conflict continues.
