Europe Builds Its Own Missile Shield: Ukraine Launches the Freya System.
Forging an Independent Anti-Missile Defense in Europe
According to UATV: Europe has begun constructing its own independent missile defense system, driven by a shortage of production capacity and a lack of indigenous European interception technologies. Ukraine has taken a leading role by initiating the development of the Freya anti-ballistic missile system, actively involving European partners. In response to the growing threat of ballistic missiles, both the European Union and NATO are taking steps to bolster their defensive capabilities.
Aviation expert Konstantin Kryvolap noted that a missile with a range of 200-300 kilometers can be converted into a surface-to-air missile. He emphasized that
“we clearly understand: if you have a ballistic missile, you can turn it into an anti-aircraft missile.”This makes hit-to-kill technology—direct kinetic impact on a target—a critical component in developing new missile defense systems.
Cost and Components of the Air Defense System
A year ago, Germany planned to produce GMT missiles for intercepting aerodynamic targets, reflecting European nations' ambition to equip the continent with new defense technologies. However, producing PAC-3 MSE missiles will require a license, which could pose a challenge to these plans.
Among the essential components for building an air defense system, the expert highlights powerful radars:
- The Hensoldt TRML-4D radar costs between $15 and $30 million.
- The French Ground Master radar is priced in the range of approximately $20 to $35 million.
Assembling a complete system using European components is estimated to cost between $150 and $350 million, underscoring the significant financial investment required for the project.
Launching a single missile would cost less than $1 million, making this technology more affordable compared to other system development expenses. Kryvolap also stated:
“What makes a good air defense system? First and foremost—a sufficiently powerful radar.”Such comments highlight the importance of a strong technological foundation for effective air defense in Europe.
