EU Pressures Serbia to Tighten Rules for Russian Citizens Over Security Fears.
EU-Serbia Visa Policy Dispute
According to UATV: Brussels is urging Belgrade to align its domestic regulations with European Union visa standards, citing security risks linked to Serbia granting citizenship to Russians. European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier stated that the 2025 enlargement report recommends Serbia continue this alignment. Last year's report already flagged that granting Serbian citizenship to Russians could pose a threat to EU security.
'In our 2025 enlargement report, we recommended that Serbia further harmonize with EU visa policy and ensure strict checks on visa-free arrivals from third countries, especially those posing security threats or illegal migration risks.' — Guillaume Mercier
Mercier emphasized the need for rigorous screening of visa-free travelers from nations that may represent a security danger or a high risk of illegal immigration. These recommendations remain in effect today.
Serbia's Path Forward
In response, Serbia is now considering scrapping its visa-free arrangement with Russia, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the country's commitments to the European Union.
This development underscores broader geopolitical challenges facing Europe, particularly in light of Russian aggression and its repercussions. Aligning Serbian visa policy with EU requirements could prove critical for safeguarding security at both national and European levels. It may also reshape Serbia-Russia relations, as ending visa-free travel would mark a symbolic step toward strengthening Serbia's European integration.
