First GLP-1 Weight Loss Pill Gets FDA Approval: Here’s What Foundayo Will Cost.
FDA Greenlights Foundayo Oral Tablet for Obesity Treatment
According to Vox - Загальний: On October 3, 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Foundayo, the first oral GLP-1 pill developed by Eli Lilly, for treating obesity in the United States. This milestone marks a significant technological shift from traditional injectable medications to a more convenient tablet form, potentially simplifying treatment regimens for patients. For context, GLP-1 drugs have gained widespread attention for their effectiveness in weight management, but until now, they were only available as injections.
Unlike injectables, the Foundayo pill can be taken without restrictions on food or water intake, making it easier for patients to incorporate into daily routines. Data shows that roughly 12% of Americans have already tried GLP-1 medications, while 37% of the population struggles with obesity. This highlights a substantial opportunity for this new treatment to reach individuals seeking help with weight control.
Pricing and Accessibility of the Drug
The monthly cost for a starter dose of Foundayo is set at $149, with subsequent refills priced at $299. Notably, Lilly has secured an agreement with Medicare, which will cover the new pill with a patient co-pay of just $50 per month. This arrangement could make the medication far more affordable for many patients managing obesity.
Company representative Dave Ricks remarked: 'This is a pill we’re used to—one we can put in our pill organizer and take alongside other oral medications.'
The approval of Foundayo could represent a major step forward in combating obesity in the U.S. Given the high prevalence of obesity across the population, this new treatment format may greatly enhance both accessibility and therapeutic effectiveness. A key factor is the Medicare deal, which aims to reduce financial barriers for patients with limited resources.
The introduction of GLP-1 pills has the potential to transform obesity care, offering patients fresh options for managing their weight and improving their quality of life.
