Estonia: Europe should not reduce aid to Ukraine even amid budgetary problems.
According to ТСН: Europe should not reduce support for Ukraine, even if some countries are facing budgetary difficulties. This issue concerns the foundations of liberal democracy and the saving of human lives.
This opinion was expressed by the Estonian Minister of Finance, Jurgen Ligi, during the CEE Forum conference in Vienna in a comment to Bloomberg.
The need for unwavering assistance
He emphasized that questions of providing assistance to Ukraine cannot have any limitations when it comes to fundamental values and security.
Use of frozen assets
Ligi also expressed hope for the possibility of using frozen Russian assets to assist Ukraine, but currently, this mechanism is hardly being discussed at the EU level.
Threat to allies' unity
The Minister noted that one of the key threats is the potential undermining of unity among allies.
"The greatest challenge at the moment is the destruction of unity among allies, and I believe we must resist this, including in Europe,"he emphasized.
Bloomberg notes that Jurgen Ligi is known for his tough fiscal policy. Following the recession in 2008, he initiated strict austerity measures in Estonia.
Defense and responsibility
Despite this, during his time as Minister of Finance, Estonia significantly increased military spending due to fears of threats from Russia.
Ligi also emphasized that Europe must be prepared to take on greater responsibility in the event of reduced support from the U.S.
"Europe must continue to fund Ukraine if the U.S. cuts itself off from its allies,"he stated.
He added that support for Ukraine is insufficient, and other liberal democracies should become more actively involved in this matter.
Moreover, it was previously reported that there are serious disagreements within the European Union regarding the use of the €90 billion loan planned for Ukraine. Slovakia has also announced changes in its format of participation in supporting Ukraine.
Therefore, Estonia's position is clear: supporting Ukraine is not only about economic interests but also about the values at stake. The importance of unity among European allies in the face of pressure from Russia is growing. Continuous dialogue and active participation from all countries are necessary for stability in the region.
