Finland Seizes €3.7 Million in Russian Assets Amid Ukraine War.
Confiscation of Russian Assets in Finland
According to Espreso.tv: Finnish law enforcement has seized Russian assets worth €3.7 million tied to an EU external border cooperation program. The move follows Russia's military operations in Ukraine. The funds have been placed under temporary seizure, with the confiscation linked to a lawsuit filed by Ukraine's state-owned energy company 'Naftogaz' and its subsidiaries.
Russia had made its €3.7 million financial contribution before the start of the war against Ukraine in 2022. However, after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the border cooperation program was suspended. Finland's National Police Board continues active efforts to seize Russian assets. Since the beginning of 2024, assets worth over €40 million have already been confiscated. At the end of 2022, Finland also seized nearly €190 million in Russian assets during the first six months following the February invasion.
European Solidarity
These actions by Finland reflect a broader European trend of tightening sanctions against Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine. Asset seizures are part of a wider strategy aimed at limiting financial resources that could be used to fuel the war. At the same time, such measures demonstrate Europe's solidarity with Ukraine and its support for Ukraine's sovereignty amid the armed conflict.
