The incident happened when the 29-year-old player was waiting for his flight in the VIP lounge at Marseille airport. According to reports, a stranger approached him and asked to show his phone number and take a selfie.

Then he 'raised his voice' and 'tried to hit' Aguerd. Airport security quickly arrived at the scene, and the man was detained by the police.

Aguerd did not have time to file an official complaint as he needed to join the team.

Aguerd's career

Aguerd moved to West Ham for £30 million from Strasbourg in 2022. During his time with the team, he played 61 matches, scored four goals, and was part of the triumph in the 2023 Conference League final.

After last season spent on loan at Real Sociedad, Aguerd finally signed a contract with Marseille for £20 million this summer.

Marseille's sporting director Medhi Benatia stated that coach Roberto De Zerbi was very interested in acquiring him, noting:

“It’s not just because of me that [Aguerd] is here. The truth is the coach wanted him. In the USA, when the coach saw him [during preseason], he said: 'Stop everything, I want Naef Aguerd.'”

This incident highlights how important safety is for athletes, especially during travel. Aguerd, like many other professional players, faces numerous challenges related to his popularity. Despite this, he continues to work on his career, focusing on future matches and new achievements in Marseille.
