Crotone club under administration due to mafia intervention

According to The Sun: The football club FC Crotone, which once competed in Serie A, has come under court administration due to mafia interference. Police have discovered sufficient evidence of this influence.

The team from Calabria last played in Italy's top division in the 2020/21 season, but after finishing in 19th place, it was relegated.

In the following years, Crotone failed to establish itself in Serie B and suffered two consecutive relegations to Serie C, where it currently occupies 7th place in the regional group C.

Due to the discovery of 'sufficient evidence' of mafia interference, the club has been placed under court administration for a year. It is important to note that the Crotone club itself is not under investigation.

The city of Catanzaro, where the club is located, has stated that for the past decade, Crotone has faced 'conditions of intimidation and subordination' from local 'Ndrangheta clans, which are estimated to control fortunes worth tens of billions of dollars.

The club has also expressed its willingness to 'cooperate' with authorities during the investigation process.

“We will carefully review the preliminary court ruling of Catanzaro and prepare for the hearing scheduled for October 13. We note that this is by no means a punishment,” the statement said.
“The measure was taken because the Judicial Authority believes that FC Crotone has been subjected to the intimidation of 'Ndrangheta and does not even hint at the involvement or conspiracy of the club, its shareholders, or managers.”

Crotone, founded in 1923, plays its home matches at a stadium with a capacity of 16,547 spectators — Stadio Ezio Scida.

AP Such events are not new for Italian clubs, which occasionally face problems related to organized crime. Mafia interference in the sports industry underscores the importance of combating these phenomena to preserve the integrity of the game. Crotone, while going through tough times, has the opportunity to restore its image and return to healthy functioning under new management.
