EU Sanctions in Action: French and Belgian Forces Seize Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker.
Joint French-Belgian Operation
According to UATV: In a coordinated maritime action on March 2, 2023, French and Belgian authorities intercepted a tanker belonging to Russia's so-called 'shadow fleet.' This operation marks a significant step in the EU's efforts to combat illicit maritime activities and enforce sanctions designed to curb Moscow's ability to fund its war. The seizure serves as a tangible demonstration of the European Union's resolve to close loopholes in the sanctions regime.
EU foreign affairs spokesperson Anita Hipper confirmed the effectiveness of these measures, noting that since October 20, 2022, the EU has appointed a dedicated coordinator to target the shadow fleet. This move followed an agreement by EU foreign ministers to impose permanent sanctions on vessels involved in these clandestine operations. The shadow fleet is a network of often older tankers used to circumvent Western sanctions on Russian oil exports.
'This also sends a clear and unambiguous signal that we are serious about countering the shadow fleet and closing all the loopholes that Russia is trying to exploit.' Anita Hipper
Hipper emphasized that the goal of these actions is 'to stop Russia's ability to finance this aggressive war against Ukraine.' These measures underscore the European Union's commitment to decisively confront Russian aggression in Ukraine and diminish its financial resources for the conflict.
Expanding International Cooperation
The joint French-Belgian operation highlights growing international collaboration against illicit shipping, a crucial element of the EU's sanctions policy. It further reinforces the EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing aggression by disrupting the financing of military operations. Such actions may set a precedent for other nations in their efforts to counter aggression and uphold the rules-based international order.
