The designer was known for his elegant dresses and loose cuts. He introduced the 'power suits' of the 80s with broad shoulders and well-tailored trousers that became symbols of the era.
Armani gained numerous fans among celebrities including Beyoncé, Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett, Lady Gaga, and Victoria Beckham. Princess Diana also chose his trousers during her iconic walk through a minefield in 1997 for the Red Cross campaign.
The Italian maestro passed away just weeks before celebrating the 50th anniversary of his career at Milan Fashion Week.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Donatella Versace, sister of his longtime rival Gianni, expressed their condolences.
‘We will remember forever’
Meloni wrote on social media: “He was able to bring brilliance to Italian fashion and inspire the whole world.'
“An icon, a tireless worker, a symbol of the best of Italy. Thank you for everything.”
Donatella wrote on Instagram:
“The world lost a giant today. He made history and will be remembered forever.”
Actor Russell Crowe shared that he was immensely grateful to Armani for their friendship and had planned to meet in Milan at the end of this month.
“So many important moments in my life — awards, weddings, Wimbledon... all in Armani.”
Armani, also known as Re Giorgio — King Giorgio — became a symbol of Italian style and inspired women to wear suits to the office in the 80s.
The designer noted:
“Style, in my opinion, is something that can be applied to everything. I have always believed that fashion is more than clothing — it’s a way of life.”
Stars like Julia Roberts chose his clothing for the red carpet, and Jodie Foster won an Oscar in 1992 wearing his white smoking coat and shimmering trousers.
