Authorities were alerted to the theft in Piopio around 2:30 AM.

Two people on an ATV attempted to rob a store by breaking a window.

Upon arrival, police deployed spike strips on the road, successfully stopping the ATV.

Deputy Police Commissioner Jill Rogers stated that the first officer who arrived was shot in the head while approaching the ATV.

Shortly after, a second police car arrived, and one officer opened fire, delivering a fatal shot to Tom Phillips, who died at the scene despite receiving aid.

Police confirmed that it was Tom Phillips, although formal identification has not yet taken place.

One of Phillips's three children was also at the scene and was taken into custody.

Rogers stated that their top priority is to locate the other two children and urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement.

The Commissioner remarked that this is a 'tragic' outcome that 'nobody wanted' and expressed her condolences to the Phillips family.

The injured police officer was urgently hospitalized for surgery.

In a message to police personnel, it was noted that the officer was conscious and communicated with colleagues.

The owner of Village Bakery Cafe in Piopio stated that there had been attempted thefts at the PGG Wrightson store nearby overnight.

This incident triggered an alarm at the bakery.

The CEO of PGG Wrightson confirmed that they were victims of an attempted theft and mentioned that the police were fully controlling the scene.

Phillips disappeared into the wild nearly four years ago and evaded multiple arrests despite an active manhunt and sightings.

He fled with three children — Jayda, 11 years old, Maverick, 10 years old, and Ember, 9 years old — after losing custody of them.

He faces multiple charges, including robbery and illegal possession of firearms.

Despite a massive manhunt, this seasoned bushman managed to avoid arrest for nearly four years.

Last week, police spotted him on surveillance footage where two masked individuals were seen attempting to break into the store in Piopio, leading to his confrontation with police.

Law enforcement believes the video depicts Phillips and one of his children.

Senior Detective Andy Sanders commented:

“At the core of this are three children who have been missing for four years. Their well-being is our top priority.”

The father faced numerous charges, including aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding, and illegal possession of firearms, according to police.

In 2023, he was charged with bank robbery and shooting at a supermarket employee.

This incident raises community concerns for the children's welfare and highlights the complexities law enforcement face when confronting dangerous criminals. Ongoing efforts to locate the other children remain a priority for the police and the community.
