Zelensky proposed Trump security guarantees for 50 years: what is the US response

According to ТСН: Ukraine and the USA have reached an agreement on the military aspects of security guarantees, but Kyiv demands that their validity period be 50 years.

Volodymyr Zelensky announced this during a press conference, commenting on the results of negotiations with Donald Trump.

“The USA says that the security guarantees will not last forever if an agreement is not reached today. Why will these American security guarantees disappear?”

Guarantees for 15 years — just the beginning

According to the president, the prepared documents specify a term of 15 years. This proposal was made by the American side as a basis for the agreement already approved at the level of presidents and teams.

“Currently, the documents state 15 years with the possibility of extension. We discussed this with the teams, and yesterday we confirmed with the president of the USA that we will have strong security guarantees from the USA. Indeed, for now, this is not forever. The documents provide for 15 years with the possibility of extension, but I told him (Trump — ed.): our war has been going on for almost 15 years. Therefore, we need longer horizons,” the president of Ukraine noted.

Historical proposal for Trump

Zelensky urged Trump to consider granting guarantees for 30, 40, or even 50 years. The President of Ukraine noted that Trump took this idea seriously.

“I raised this issue with the president; I told him that we are already at war, and it has been going on for almost 15 years. Therefore, I really wanted the guarantees to be longer, and I suggested considering the possibility of 30, 40, 50 years. This could be a historic decision for President Trump. He said he would think about it,” Zelensky added.

What has already been agreed

The package of agreements discussed in Florida includes:

  • Military guarantees: agreed at 100%.

  • Joint guarantees from the USA and Europe: readiness at 90%.

  • Plan for economic prosperity: at the final stage.

Zelensky emphasized that strong security guarantees are a key condition for further actions within the peace plan, including a possible referendum on territorial issues if Russia agrees to a long-term ceasefire.

Trump, during the dialogue with the Ukrainian leader, noted significant progress towards the end of the war, estimating the finalization of agreements at 95%. He confirmed that he conducted in-depth consultations with key allies in Europe and had a conversation with Putin. Trump added that, despite the overall progress and agreed security aspects, the most contentious issue remains the future of Donbas.

Zelensky also reported that the developed peace plan with 20 points is currently approved at 90%. He emphasized the unprecedented level of support in the field of security: conditions for military assistance and security guarantees based on NATO's Article 5 have been agreed with the USA at 100%.

New round of negotiations between the leaders of Ukraine and the USA is scheduled for December 29.

These negotiations underscore the importance of long-term security guarantees for Ukraine in the context of the ongoing conflict. Subsequent discussions may determine Ukraine's further strategy in implementing the peace plan and impact international support, particularly from the United States and European allies.
