Crimea Is Ukraine's Most Critical Territory in the War, Says General Hodges.
Why Crimea Matters in the Conflict
According to Espreso.tv: Retired U.S. Army General Ben Hodges, who once commanded American forces in Europe, has highlighted Crimea as the single most important geographic region for Ukraine in the ongoing war. He points out that controlling the peninsula gives access to the Black Sea. Hodges stresses the Ukrainian Armed Forces' ongoing efforts to isolate Crimea and emphasizes the necessity of destroying the Kerch Bridge.
“The Autonomous Republic of Crimea is the most important part of Ukraine's geography in this war,” Hodges stated.
Russia illegally annexed the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, a key turning point in the conflict. Ukraine's military is using a range of tools to achieve its objectives, including:
- long-range and medium-range drones
- maritime unmanned vehicles
- special operations
- missiles
Over the past month, traffic along the 'Novorossiya' route has dropped by more than two-thirds, a sign that Ukrainian actions are paying off.
Isolating the Peninsula
Additionally, on June 11, Colonel Robert 'Madyar' Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, announced that Ukraine is nearing the complete isolation of Crimea. Hodges added:
“Another hugely important part of this story is isolating the Crimean Peninsula to cut it off from the rest of Russia.”
He also expressed hope for 'the collapse of the Crimean Bridge and its destruction.' These comments underscore Crimea's strategic significance in the war and Ukraine's push to sever it from Russian supply lines.
Given Crimea's strategic role in the conflict, Ukraine's efforts to isolate it could significantly hamper Russia's military capabilities in the region. The sharp decline in traffic on key transport routes suggests Ukraine is gradually achieving its goals. Further successes in this area may shift the war's balance of power, underscoring the importance of continued international support for Ukraine.
