Charges Filed Against Those Behind Child Deportations

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, has announced charges against three individuals accused of orchestrating the forced transfer of 213 Ukrainian children from the Donetsk region to Russia. The announcement was made on the anniversary of the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova. According to Kravchenko, the suspects include the self-proclaimed 'Minister of Education and Science of the DNR,' the 'head of the Donetsk city administration,' and the director of a boarding school. They are being charged with violating the laws and customs of war.

The Deportation and Its Aftermath

The children were forcibly removed during a so-called 'evacuation' organized by Russian forces on February 16, 2022. Just two days later, on February 18, 2022, 213 residents of the boarding school were deported. To date, not a single child from this group has been returned. Specifically, 78 Ukrainian children were illegally placed with Russian families. In contrast, a total of 2,048 children have been successfully brought back to Ukraine through President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Bring Kids Back UA initiative.

Ruslan Kravchenko emphasized, 'This is not an evacuation. It is the deportation of Ukrainian children and a war crime.'

He also noted that the international community must recognize that 'Russia is deliberately destroying the identity of our children.' These events have raised serious concerns among Ukrainian authorities and international organizations monitoring children's rights during wartime.

This situation highlights the severe humanitarian challenges Ukraine faces amid the war. The deportation of children is not only a violation of international law but also a threat to their identity and future. It is crucial that Ukrainian authorities are actively responding to these violations by drawing the international community's attention to the situation, aiming to secure the return of deported children and hold those responsible accountable.
