The head of the union of public utilities consumers, Oleg Popenko, spoke about the plans for installing cogeneration units in the Kyiv region. During an air on the Kyiv 24 TV channel, he commented on the initiative of the head of Kyiv Regional State Administration Ruslan Kravchenko.

According to Kravchenko, it is planned to install 19 cogeneration units with a total capacity of over 50 MW in three districts of the Kyiv region. These systems are expected to provide electricity and heat to residents of eight settlements in the region.

Popenko noted that for residents of apartment buildings, the situation will not change significantly. "The main purpose of the cogeneration unit is to produce electricity for the operation of boilers or the water supply system. If the heat carrier is produced by the cogeneration unit, it will enter the general system. Therefore, for residents of multi-storied buildings, this initiative will not bring noticeable changes," the expert explained.

He also drew attention to the difficulties associated with the installation of such units: "It's not easy to place it in the open air, next to a residential area. It is necessary to carefully choose the place for installation. In the Kyiv region, most units are planned to be installed on the territory of boiler houses. This is due to the availability of necessary connections to the electricity grid, heating system, and gas pipeline".

Cogeneration Units for Energy Efficiency

Cogeneration units are highly efficient systems that simultaneously produce electrical and thermal energy from a single fuel source, most often natural gas. They can significantly increase energy efficiency, reduce energy resource costs, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.

Popenko added that while cogeneration units have many advantages, their effectiveness for end-users in apartment buildings may be limited due to the peculiarities of the existing infrastructure. However, it is worth noting that this technology can become an important step in modernizing the region's energy system and enhancing its resilience to possible power supply disruptions.
