Poisoning of limoncello in Vietnam: parents tell how they bought the deadly drink for their daughter and son-in-law.
Tragic death of a young couple who died from poisoning
According to The Sun: The parents of the woman who died along with her fiancé revealed that they were the ones who purchased the toxic limoncello that caused their death.
33-year-old Greta Marie Otteson and 36-year-old Arno Els Quinton were found dead in their villa in Vietnam on Boxing Day, three days after consuming the dangerous drink.
Greta Marie Otteson, 33, and Arno Els Quinton, 36, were found dead in their villa in Vietnam. The police urgently launched an investigation and found that the couple died from methanol poisoning, likely due to the limoncello consumed.
The bartender who allegedly made the dangerous drink was arrested in February and is currently in custody.
Greta's parents, Paul (71 years old) and Susan (70 years old), visited the couple in Vietnam on November 24 – during their stay, they managed the villa and rented rooms to travelers. During the visit, they enjoyed complimentary shots of limoncello at a restaurant.
Upon returning home, the family decided to order a few bottles of the drink as a Christmas gift, of which they later regretted.
Greta informed her parents that she had 'the worst hangover of her life' and saw 'black spots' before her eyes. The couple, despite persistent calls from friends, decided to 'sleep it off' instead of seeing a doctor.
Three days later, they were found dead in separate rooms of the villa during cleaning.
“It's a matter of accountability,” said Paul, adding, “we can't move on.”
The ashes of Greta and Arno are currently stored in two bags at Otteson's home, one of which has a pink bunny and the other a blue bear.
The parents confess that they cannot bury them until they receive 'justice.' They want the people responsible for the tragedy to be held accountable.
Sad consequences
Reports indicate that the couple had dinner on December 24, returning to the villa around 10 PM. Two bottles of limoncello were at the reception, delivered earlier that same night.
The establishment where they purchased the drink is known for its popularity and offers limoncello at low prices, raising questions about its safety.
Experience and memories
Greta and Arno got engaged less than a month before the tragedy. They moved to Vietnam and settled in Hoi An, renting the villa where they were found.
'Greta and Arno were experienced travelers. They found their ideal home and were incredibly happy in their new life in Vietnam,' noted Paul.
Greta worked as a digital strategist and ran a content marketing agency, while Arno was a barista and musician.
Arno Els Quinton died from methanol poisoning.
The parents of the deceased seek justice for those responsible for the tragedy. Their pain and loss may lead to enforced measures regarding alcohol quality control, highlighting the importance of safe consumption in restaurants and public establishments. The tragedy of Greta and Arno should serve as a lesson for the public and relevant authorities to prevent similar cases in the future. Read also
