Allen, who gained fame by winning the Knoxville Nationals in 1990, was the co-owner of Shark Racing along with his grandson Logan Schuchart.

The team’s car was driven by Ashton Torgerson.

Sporting Career

As a teenager, Bobby actively competed in karting. His father, Joe, already had experience driving regular cars, which encouraged Bobby to start racing at the age of one and a half.

Eventually, Allen aimed to compete against the best drivers.

“I’m from Miami, and Jim Rathmann was the driver of the Indy car from Miami. So, I participated in some karting races under his guidance,” Allen recalled in 2020.

“I won quite a few awards for a 16-17-year-old guy; and by talking to the Indy car driver, I dreamed of being in Indianapolis. At the time, sprint cars were the best route to Indianapolis, so I headed to Pennsylvania where sprint races were held three to four times a week.”

Although Allen never competed in the Indianapolis 500, he found success as a sprint car driver.

In 1988, he was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

“I’ve always been a bit of a rebel,” he confessed. “Well, maybe even a lot.”

According to estimates, Allen won about 275 sprint races, including 46 in the All Star Circuit of Champions.

“I didn’t realize how important it was to win at Nationals until a few years went by and people started talking about it – about its prestige,” he added.

“Then I began to understand that it was quite a big race to win.”
