The European Super League may be left without participants

According to The Sun: The football club Barcelona may exit the European Super League project, which would leave Real Madrid as the only participant.

Since the announcement of the league's creation, 12 major clubs have sparked outrage among fans worldwide.

After six clubs from the English Premier League withdrew from the project due to mass protests, Barcelona and Real Madrid remained the only ones supporting this initiative.

According to the Spanish publication RAC1, Barcelona may renounce the Super League due to positive changes in the reformed Champions League. The new structure of this competition, which started last season, includes 36 teams instead of the usual eight groups.

Such changes allowed not only an increase in the number of matches but also in revenue, as well as ensuring more encounters between elite teams before the playoff stage.

Barcelona seeks to 'continue working with UEFA' and, as reported by the source, plans to refuse participation in the Super League.

The relationship between Laporta and UEFA President Alexander Ceferin has improved following their joint attendance at the match between Barcelona and PSG, where the Catalans lost 1:2.

Real Madrid remains the only club fully advocating this Super League, which last year was rebranded as the Unify League.

The Unify League is managed by A22 Sports Management, which has close ties with La Liga clubs. They propose three divisions with 96 teams.

John Hahn, one of the co-founders of A22, noted that the company hopes to attract new clubs to the initiative after consulting with fans.

“We have been listening closely to representatives of many clubs, leagues, and fans, and believe we have support with these changes,” he said.
“We do not expect public support from clubs at this moment; it makes more sense that it will come after the official recognition of Unify League.”

The director of A22, Bernd Reichart, added: “We are in communication with enough clubs to support the idea of the tournament.”

However, an August report indicated that A22 might face financial difficulties after the Spanish publication Sport reported losses of £4.8 million in 2024.

Chelsea fans are protesting against the Super League proposals.

The situation with the European Super League remains extremely tense. After protests supported by millions of fans, clubs that were once top players in this initiative began to reassess their positions. Thus, if Barcelona ultimately withdraws from participation, it could lead to further destabilization of the project that sought to be an alternative to traditional football competitions.
