Freddie Flintoff talked about the accident on Top Gear: how a decision saved his life.
Becoming a cricket master
According to The Sun: Andrew Flintoff recalls a funny moment when he was offered his first professional contract in cricket. The English sports legend, now 47, made his professional cricket debut for the Lancashire team in 1995, having progressed from youth teams.
PA:Press AssociationFlintoff was predicted to have great success from a young age, so club icon David Lloyd personally visited his hometown to discuss a contract. In the podcast 'Stick to Cricket', Flintoff shared:
“He came and said: ‘Right, we want to sign your Andrew.’
“And my mom and dad were like: ‘Oh, this is something.’
“He started talking about money and said: ‘At Lancashire, we pay well. Ian Austin gets 16 thousand, Michael Atherton — 22.5 thousand…
“We’ll start Andrew at 2.5 thousand,’ and I was on cloud nine.
“And then he sold my parents this dream about me. I’ll never forget, I walked into Old Trafford a few weeks later — everything was on the verge of completion.
“He said: ‘Don’t mind what I told your parents, it’s really tough here!'”
Flintoff's openness
In a new edition of his book, Flintoff shares his life experiences, including the horrific accident he survived while filming 'Top Gear' in 2022. He recounts the split-second decision that saved his life:

I knew that, one way or another, I knew what was going to happen.
“I knew my options: if I stuck my hand out, I’d lose it. If I didn’t brace myself, I’d break my neck.
“So I made a decision. I closed my eyes and raised my left hand, thinking, as a right-handed person, I was ready to lose my left.
“The car dragged me underneath for 50 meters, face down on the asphalt, my body flipping. Minus two degrees, a broken face, but I was alive — because at that moment, focused on the demands of cricket, my mind made the right decision. A split-second decision. The one that saved my life and changed it.”
This candid account by Flintoff not only emphasizes his journey to success in cricket but also the significant challenges he has faced in life. His experience can serve as inspiration for many, especially those facing difficulties in their lives and careers. Every success can come with risks, and it is crucial to be able to make the right decisions in critical situations.
