High School Football Star Suffers Spinal Injury
According to The Sun: A 15-year-old teenager from Michigan, Colton Mins, suffered a spinal fracture after a harsh tackle during a football match.
WWMT WWMTColton, who played for Lakeshore High School, was thrown to the ground during a match against Kalamazoo Central (number 73 from the last team). A video of this moment quickly went viral as it terrifyingly showed him trying to get up.
Before he could rise, the bigger opponent threw him down again. Colton was carried off the field on a stretcher and taken to the hospital with a diagnosis of two spinal fractures, according to WWMT.
“I have never felt anything like this,” said Mins's mother, Courtney, who was on the sidelines.
“I have never been so upset or confused about anything concerning my son.”
“These boys are high school students. They are 15 years old. The game means a lot to them. It’s their whole life right now.”
“They dedicate themselves, coming from morning till evening, and to see someone trying to take this away from someone who works so hard is awful.”
Colton's mother confirmed that her son has a chance for a “full recovery.”
Career Prospects in Football at Risk
However, the teen's football career may already be at risk.
“He will miss at least this part of the season,” she added.
“We don’t know if he will be able to play again.”
“He must and can fully recover.”
Currently, Colton is taking muscle relaxants after being discharged from the hospital.
A representative from the Michigan High School Athletic Association noted: “We are aware of the situation you are describing. We are in contact with both schools and they are addressing the issue internally.”
Thus, this situation highlights the serious risks that young athletes face in the context of intense competition and aggressive play. Many parents and coaches are now contemplating the safety of students during competitions, as injuries can have severe consequences for their health and careers.
