River Island to close 35 stores: what is known about the massive restructuring

According to The Sun: The footwear and clothing chain announces the closure of one of its stores, marking the beginning of major sales.

The River Island store at Showgrounds Retail Park in Omagh, Northern Ireland, will close its doors in a few hours.

AlamyRiver Island is closing 35 of its stores as part of a major restructuring aimed at saving the company.

This is one of 35 stores that will close permanently as part of significant changes within the chain.

Before the closure, the store is offering discounts on all items for several pounds.

Everything in the store costs £10 or less, and all tops and children's clothing will cost £5.

Customers can also purchase dresses and coats for £10 or less.

The store announced it was forced to close its doors due to an inability to agree on the terms of a new lease with the landlord.

“As you can imagine, our team is utterly disappointed, especially given such a short notice.”

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our wonderful customers who have shopped with us over the years! We know you will miss seeing us too.”

“We hope to see as many of you as possible by September 22. I also want to wish my team the best of luck in their future.”

Customers were shocked by the news, with one remarking that it is “ridiculous.”

“River Island was the only decent fashionable clothing store in Omagh.”

Last month, the High Court approved a major restructuring plan for the business.

River Island warns that without restructuring efforts, it will be unable to continue trading and will go into administration.

They stated that they have a “clear transformation strategy to ensure the long-term viability of the business.”

The plans initially included the closure of 33 stores, but this number has increased to 35.

The retail chain is also negotiating with landlords for rent reductions to avoid further closures.

River Island is expected to receive new funding as well.

There are currently over 250 River Island stores in the country and approximately 5,500 employees.

These plans will ensure the preservation of more than 140 stores and thousands of jobs.

However, last month, 110 jobs were cut in the head office after 100 employees lost their jobs in January.

Problems on the streets

Like many retail businesses, River Island has faced difficulties due to rising costs amid declining consumer demand.

Their branch in Crawford, London, also closed last Saturday, September 20.

Today, their store in Norfolk will close, and next Sunday, September 28, in Stafford.

The retail chain announced major sales with discounts of up to 70% in all three stores ahead of their closure.

This followed closures of Hobbycraft stores in Maidenhead and Chichester on Thursday.

The chain initiated a strategic review of the business in May to improve financial performance.

The original factory has been closing stores across the UK for several weeks as part of a restructuring.

Over the weekend, they closed their store in Market Drayton, Shropshire. The company has already closed several stores this year, and 28 stores are awaiting closure.

The retail sector situation reflects broader economic trends where companies are trying to adapt to new conditions and find solutions to support their operations in the market.

Store closures, like those of River Island and Hobbycraft, demonstrate the challenges faced by retail trade amid ongoing changes in consumer behavior and increasing costs.
